Hi, can you help me out? I can’t remember what was allowed and what not when choosing character names in D2 (and D2R - is it going to change?). I’m pretty sure that swear words were automatically rejected on character creation, but not sure if one can get banned for e.g. sexually explicit nicknames? Obviously, the clearly offensive stuff should always result in a ban, but I am not sure where the line is drawn for joke names and such. I know that Path of Exile allows pretty much everything, since it’s targeted for mature audiences (I guess Diablo doesn’t have enough gore and pentagrams to qualify ;)).
If the nickname is something your Grandma wouldn’t want you saying in front of a young child, then don’t use it as a nickname.
Potty mouths make Grandma want to have you go fetch a switch… And it better be a good one too or SHE’s going to go get one! ![]()
Expect to be reported if you have a sexually themed name.
About a month ago, someone joined this forum with one that wasn’t flagged by Blizzard as impossible to make.
He posted here, was flagged, and within a day was forced to change his name. I wouldn’t bother with the hassle, tbh.
They removed the harem girls, you think they will allow sexually explicit stuff?
For those, the policy is that the name ‘must stand on its own’.
Meaning, any additional personal meanings are not justification to use an inappropriate name. If reported, CS will judge it on how the community would perceive it, not on how the person who chose it does.
I suggested they lock the standard names that get sold on open market:
Potion
Health
Mana
Boss
All Character Name References
speaking of that , i still haven’t decided on the name of my characters , need one for each possible build… the ones i used in diablo 2 OG were meh.
I mean… my hurricane druid was named WinDooD (wind + dood) for example , need better name , i have 1 month to decide
Names wont be unique, anyone can use any name already in use
I tried during beta and I could not get the name I wanted since it was already in use, was that only a beta thing?
I dont know, I didnt try it, but it was announced during the first days that char names will no longer be unique
Names currently are Unique. Thats something they haven’t changed yet.
Thats a proven fact.
Do you know if, in such cases, CS sends a warning or a name change request first?
Again, I am talking more about the gray area, not offensive names.
brb, stealing WinDood.
doubt you can unless not in europe server , i think he is still alive
In those cases, the first time, they just send a forced name change and that’s it. Account penalties aren’t typical for first offenses (when it’s not egregiously inappropriate).
It’s important not to pick another inappropriate name, and definitely don’t rename it to what it was. When players do those, that’s when the penalties start kicking in.
The way ratings system work, they rate the game content the Devs make. They don’t rate the Player created content (names, chat, etc.). The Player created content has to go by the company polices, which are very family friendly.
If you would not say it around families of all ages at the town fall festival or church picnic, don’t use it. The Forum Code of Conduct is a pretty good place to start reading - it goes into detail about the types of things Blizz does not allow.
Also, just because some limited filters don’t catch something, does not make it ok to use.
And here is the Game Code of Conduct which covers all Blizzard games equally. Blizzard Support - Blizzard's In-Game Code of Conduct
Blizzard games offer a fun and safe place to interact with one another across various game worlds. We encourage our players to cooperate and compete in our games, but crossing the line into abuse is never acceptable. If you come across a player violating the policies below, you should report them.
Communication
When participating in communication of any kind (chat, voice communication, group finder), you are responsible for how you express yourself. You may not use language that could be offensive or vulgar to others.
Hate speech and discriminatory language is inappropriate, as is any obscene or disruptive language. Threatening or harassing another player is always unacceptable, regardless of language used. Violating any of these expectations will result in account restrictions. More serious and repeated violations will result in greater restrictions.
Naming
Names are subject to the same rules established above. Any name the player has the ability to customize—such as player names, BattleTags, and guild names—must be appropriate and inoffensive. Any name that violates our standards or disrupts the community will be changed, and additional limitations may be placed on the offending account per our discretion.
Take note that acceptable names are determined by player reports and Blizzard’s decision, and role-playing servers may have distinct standards for using game-appropriate names
Its quite solid that they are deleting the character names from Beta/Technical Tests. You won’t have any “locked in” names. I asked this specifically.
Yup names aren’t unique in D2R
oh - did you meet my lvl 30 barb during beta?
Ya but they did say or write somewhere that names are not unique for D2R and go by the battle.net tag system for differentiation.
The beta didn’t have most of the social features working so I don’t know if the code for this was even ready or there.
Edit: and since nothing is being kept a temporary name database could be used with no harm.
