My PC crashed while playing D2R and when I rebooted it the character in question was no longer in the character selection screen. If I try to create a new character with the same name the game says that character still exists. All of the files for that character are still present in the D2R save file folders. I’ve already tried deleting and restoring those files and the problem persists.
the file you need to delete is called
.d2s
this file is corrupted but still exists… so naturally the game sees such a file and claims the character already exists, yet the file is corrupted and game can’t read it, so the character doesn’t show up…
besides if your PC crashed this literally means one thing… Your graphic quality settings are too high and the machine is unable to handle the load during stress time…
So just to confirm, I keep all the file extensions related to the character in question but delete the .d2s file for that character?
Well it depends what you want, other files are mostly map layout files so if you want to keep them go ahead, if you want new map layouts delete them as well…
Also remember to empty recycle bin.
Also make sure your shared stash file is intact…
Startthe game with a different chcaracter and check shared stash. If the character can enter the game the shared stash file is fine…
If you can’t enter the game with other chars you’d be forced to remove SharedStashSoftcoreV2.d2i as well or something similar…
So there’s absolutely no way of fixing or salvaging a corrupted .d2s file? Not even by deleting it and restoring it back into the save folder or running the file repair program on the Battlenet app?
You could try a ggm savegame editor, an online hero editor for d2r made by ginger gaming mentor, it should be compatible with latest version of the game, and some previous ones, but if that fails than, it’s hopeless… sorry…
Be advised though the editor works correctly only in google chrome browser…
