Nintendo Switch -- Offline Character Gone

Like many players, I’ve lost an offline character. I haven’t found many posts specifically about the Switch version, so here’s what I experienced:

  1. I created an online character and played a few levels.
  2. Since I kept getting disconnected, I made a new offline character. She had the same name as my online character.
  3. I played her up to level 7-8 (don’t remember), then saved and exited to play a different game on the console
  4. When I returned to Diablo II, the online character was there, but the offline one was gone.
  5. I exited the game, checked for updates and downloaded one, then re-entered. Still no character.
  6. Following other threads, I created a new offline character (different class, different name), in hope that the old one would reappear.
  7. The new character could access items the missing character stored in the shared stash. The missing character did not reappear.
  8. Briefly, the online character disappeared.
  9. On a theory that my issue could be caused by having the same name, I deleted the online character. Offline still missing. Shared stash still populated.

I figured there’s a good chance my last step killed my offline character for good and I have to start over. But I hope this contributes to Support’s investigation of the issue on all platforms.

Edit: I also turned on airplane mode a few times to avoid loading any online profiles.

I have experienced this issue a few times. It seems that there could be a save issue when new characters are created and the game is closed shortly after. I have been able to avoid it by creating the new character, leveling it up, interacting with the shared stash and then moving on to play with a different offline character before closing the application. This allowed me to create a few mules. But now the issue seems unavoidable. With 19 characters on singleplayer, there is no workaround that I know of that will make new characters persist. I can create a new character and it will be listed while the game doesn’t close. Whenever it closes, they vanish. It would be really nice if Blizzard could fix this bug, it is really annoying that we cannot create new characters at will. As far as I know, the limit for characters in singleplayer mode is 30, so I am far from reaching it. I have seen a lot of people complaining about this, so it seems to affect a lot of players.

This happened recently and the character disappeared when I was well into act two. It was days after I made the character and took gear and gold from shared stash all gone. I made another character a few weeks later but that one stayed.

Hopefully this will be fixed with the new DLC. It would be a shame not being able to play the new class because new characters don’t persist.

Good news, I was able to make a new character and it persisted after I restarted the game. Now I can play with the new Warlock class and, more importantly, I was finally able to make my Maces mule.
