Gem/spell casting question

Absolute noob question here. I can’t find the answer anywhere. I’ve never played a caster and didn’t think about this until starting a sorceress today.

If I have a socketed two hand staff and add…say a + fire damage gem or two…does that add fire damage to spells I’m already casting? I can’t figure out if the + fire damage is lost because I’m not using the staff as melee and I’m not firing physical objects like arrows. If I’m casting fire can I add + lightning damage gems to a staff and do that type of damage along with the fire spells? Thanks.

fire damage from gems applies to the weapon/physical damage and not spells. there’s another type of “gem” but it’s called a jewel, a unique jewel, called “Rainbow Facet” which can add elemental damage to spells but they’re much harder to find

Thank you. So I’m assuming the + mana after kill gems don’t work in weapons when casting either, correct?

that one i’m not sure about. mana after death is usually such a small amount that it wouldn’t matter after like level 20 because other skills and stats dealing with mana come into play for casters.

  • to mana after kill is perfect for a caster, it will trigger. It doesn’t work on Traps or summons but sorc spells, yes.

Only a few exceptions are related to elemental damage being directly aplied on skills, like exploding arrow. But all of those skills have physical related damage.

Sorc on other hand, have purely elemental ones. She already have enough damage, my advice is increase mana, use runeword or add some tir tunes on gear. The later would return mana after kill which on a bit after the beginning and mid stages you would have the ability to kill foes a bit easier.
