Game frozen -> lost HC char

Ok. So, I just lost a lvl85 HC char with decent gear. The game just frozen when I was tele’ing, and stayed frozen for like 10 seconds. Then, the game closed without any error messages. Started the game again to find out my char was dead. Just like that.

I only play HC in d2, and what I can say, is this is game breaking for me. Not playing d2 again until it’s stable. This game should not be released this way… not by blizzard… not by this price.

Is there any chance to a game moderator to rollback the death, since it was caused by a game crash? Or, ofc not?

In all the 20 years this game has existed, not one HC character death has been restored. RIP in peace.

if dying like this bothers you so much… why deal with HC?

I had a friend like this, HC only… always trying to convince everyone to go HC… yah no, everyone response “And lag, freeze and die? no thank you”

Yup. What’s done is done.

Your deeds of valor will be remembered. :pensive:

Lol. I used to lose them all the time back in the days of dialup. Never put your character into a questionable situation because you can disconnect at any moment. Lesson learned. You kids are spoiled as hell these days.

So, you weren’t an original player obviously. You wouldn’t be crying if you were. This was a fact of life in the early 2000s. You were probably gonna disconnect and die if you got cocky.

I still play softcore like I could lose connection at any moment. I don’t take the connection stability for granted when muling for example.

I actually was an original player. Dying to a disconnect is not a problem of the game. Dying because the game crashes is a whole different thing.

Drink to the Dead
You have died. and that is how it shall remain

One thing some people do is SC but delete on legitimate death. Basically a psuedo HC mode idea.

Dying due to my own mistakes doesn’t bother me. Dying because the game doesn’t work like it 's supposed to, does.

Sorry to hear this HugoMS. Rest in Peace.
Dont listen to the people giving you a hard time, not worth it. Old people can be grumpy and they cherish their memories of slogging through this game uphill in the snow with no shoes on with their dial up.
…Sadly they do not rollback things like this, since D2R does not have moment to moment logs.

Take a break, and maybe give it another try! (hopefully when servers have more stability)

Thanks teafan!
Actually, I am myself one of the old players… I played the original game for years on dial-up connection, alywas on HC. Never lost a single char due to a game crash.

The problem is that this kind of bugs turns the game unplayable in HC mode. If the crash closes the game instantly, then it’s ok (kind of). But, if you char stays on the open game on the server even if the client crashes, then it’s game breaking for HC.

Rest Hugo Rest…

It gives me an excuses to drink so everyone please post you HC deaths.

Server has been killing people in this game for ages. Blizz just got a little OP in the servers ability to kill people lately.

Get back on the horse and make a new one, that’s what HC is about!

Not sure you got the real ‘original D2 experience’ if you never lost an HC char to the Black Wall of Death!

I had a terrible lvl 65 char death that was due to a new mechanic in D2R:

I was playing in a NM game when my son started his copy of D2R on the computer next to me. I had previously played on that computer and my account login was stored. He accidentally logged into my account. I was automatically and instantly kicked out of D2R completely, but apparently my character didn’t leave the game. Blizzard treats this as a disconnect situation and my character must have been idle in game for quite some time and was killed. Kind of poor design choice by Blizzard to make a second login result in an idle character disconnect instead of a clean disconnect.

I’m not too phased by it. Sadly death by stuff out of your control is part of HC. But it hurts a little more than normal since Blizzard could have designed this one out with ease. :frowning:

HC characters are not restored under any circumstance. If losing a character to a crash is a deal breaker then don’t push the Hardcore button on the creation screen.

I understand,

sorry if my post sounded condescending, I re read it, and it sounds very condescending, and I didn’t mean it to be like that

I used to play HC until I have a few deaths like yours. long ago I had a 89 HC barb. Game didnt freeze, it did that disconnect thing where you can still run around, so you dont right away notice you DC’ed, but if you run to far you hit a black wall and cannot go farther… then it REALLY did DC me, then when I logged back on, dead.

Or my necro, was getting attacked, and I made a TP, I clicked TP, it did the loading screen thing… while loading, my character did death scream. I loaded into town dead.

Or other time I was lagging, and a death lord hit him from all the way across the screen, through a wall, did that multiple hit bug thing they do and instantly killed me

after awhile of this sh!t, having more characters die from BS and not from me actually just playing bad (yes I killed some with bad playing, not saying there was none) but I decided to do what someone else mentioned

play SC, but on legit death from stupid actions, delete character.

Also, with some of the worth of the items I use, im not down for them just being deleted out of existence. Seeing how much money you can get for some PERFECT items is CRAZY.

To allow over $100 worth of gear to just, disappear, over a crash or bug, or DC, I just cant handle it any more.

Pseudo Hardcore only now for me!

Sorry for your RIP.

I am HC always and have lost too many characters so I am playing SC for now.

All my HC friends are the same.
Freeze and RiP.

The servers are a mess and we see no fix in sight.

The only place that exists that you speak of is town. Should be an interesting end game standing in town and never leaving.

I’ve seen disconnect result in death standing near just 1 mob, which makes hardcore no longer a matter of safe playstyle, but when your next disconnect/crash will end a character. The mode no longer works in the recent version due to instability coupled with server not removing characters from games quickly enough.

You knew the state of the game long before this happened. Your deeds of valor will be remembered. Why you even asked if it can be restored knowing full well it can’t is laughable. Play softcore or single player until they fix it.

ya, Hard core should be single player, no help at all is really hard core

I didn’t. All the crashes I was seeing recently were removing the char instantly from the game. So I could deal with that. Freezing the game, and taking 10-20 seconds to remove the char from the game is game breaking for HC, and that one was new to me.

You could respond that without being toxic. I’m not 100% sure of that, since in D2R they could have added more robust logging to the game. Technically, I don’t know what happens in the server when a HC char dies. If it’s a single flag on the database, then It should be easily reversible.

Actually, I’m not pushing the “play” button again until It’s fixed. You are talking as this kind of bug is acceptable. It’s not! The problem is: HC is a play mode supported by the game, and this bug turns HC play impracticable. You see? again: this bug is ruining an entire game mode.
