Ending Bots With D2R <Critical>

Is the concept of feedback that alien for you?

This forum exists for feedback and suggestions. I work on IT and I know the fundaments of cybersecurity.

I have 2000 games, but I play, 20 hours a week, if even that much. Games are cheap and often sold on bundles, it’s fairly easy to accumulate a big collection on steam, plus I collect used PS2 games.

True, but I do own my physical copies of said games. In particular the Diablo Battle Chest, that big ol’ box with D1, D2 and LoD in it.

Anyway I don’t understand why you take issue with people giving feedback and suggestions on how to improve the quality of service in a game they pay for.

I’m sure you know this, but we are arguing with someone who is addicted to the dopamine hits he gets when anticipating a response from his trolling.

None of us have anything to do with game security for Blizzard.

So discussion is a shot in the dark at best.

Many of us have had or are currently working in IT.

I never addressed an issue that had not happened yet.

Discussing game security is a waste of time in these forums.

Let’s talk about the game instead.

I know, but I get some giggles out of it. I have some free time and I’m rocking some nice soundtracks here in my vintage stereo integrated amplifier I bought with the money I got from working in my “wasted life”. :relieved:

I own only a few games compared to you yet have spent thousand’s of hours with D2 and D3 and PoE.

Stopped playing PoE for several reasons.

Only play HC D2 and HC D3 now.

I have wasted much life on dumb games myself, so you’re not alone.

I’m pondering replacing my gaming hobby with guitar lessons. I’m really sweet on an EVH guitar and amp.

I just bought a Martin acoustic guitar 5 months ago and am getting back into it.

Doing something you enjoy in your free time is never dumb. If done in moderation, it’s great for mental health.

I’m about 50% self taught, and 50% youtube lessons. Not ideal, but I started playing when I was 9 and I lived in a town without a single guitar teacher.

I’m no EVH, but I can jam to the songs I like now, and there’s few things that feel quite as satisfying in life.

I’m an all or nothing guy. I’ve put in an enormous amount of time into the D2 LoD whirlwind barbarian (hc), so much so I’m among the best at it! I completely suck at all other games though. So if I pick up the guitar I’ll master it by dumbing 10K hours practicing within 5 years.

Megadeth Guitarist and, imo, one of the greatest alive, Kiko Loureiro has a lot of youtube videos talking about focused and intelligent guitar practicing (how to practice the right things on the instrument) and how to evolve in both technique and musicality. It’s a good watch.

There Were Bots Running In Alpha Just So Everyone Knows
Im Guessing There Will Be Bots Running Shortly After Severs Are Up

I would be absolutely amazed if D2R wasn’t every bit as overrun with bots as D2/LOD is. It’s inevitable, and, probably, unavoidable.

Tldr

Its 2021 you cant stop botting and tbh I dont really even see it as a problem.

I wouldnt even say it was a problem in its heyday, it was fun

Yes you can stop it, don’t discourage the admins. There are games that do a great job at anti cheat, including RPGs against bots. It’s about preparation and the will to do it.

Something as simple as server-side validated captcha for each game creation/joining could mitigate the botting problem a ton.
Trade off is a little nuance for legit players.

It’s a mistake, one often made unfortunately, that people claim complex problems have simple solutions.

I think you’re both overestimating the tolerance of players having to solve captcha’s frequently or even occasionally to make/enter games, and underestimating the ability of even rudimentary AI nowadays to solve them anyway.

No I get what you are saying and it was proposed rather as a suggestion than answer, it is way more complex than that and I did mention the trade off would be annoyance to the user.
I also realize A.I. evolves but so do captcha and it’s an everlasting cat and mouse game.

Other than that honestly nothing much they can do but invest more in an anti-cheating mechanism I guess, playing yet another cat and mouse game.
Maybe security would be better because this runs on modern BNET and they will issue more banwaves because of price tag? Wishful thinking…

Well, certainly I share your hope that D2R would be bot-free, but we have to take into account Blizzards track record, even if making no other considerations.

Unfortunately Blizzards track record is terrible on this matter, all their games, not just Diablos prior iterations, but just about all games across their entire stable, have been continuously infected with bots, hacks and assorted cheats.

Therefore, even leaving aside the debate over whether it is i) possible and ii) practical for Blizzard to make sure D2R is cheat free, there ought be no reasonable expectation on behalf of customers that it will be, given no other Blizzard game ever has been.

It’s not just Blizzard, Activision has a serious problem too. In my opinion, it’s an education problem. Blizzard only hires college grads to make detection programs that are valid for a few weeks at most, where as most hackers are self taught, and continuously adapting, and no education in the world is better than self taught in any field or industry. Blizzard needs to hire black hat hackers to defend against black hat hackers–a proxy war. Blizzard does not take hacking serious enough.

Pfft if you don’t get IP banned for hours switching games too fast doing countess/summoner/trav/shenk/Nihlathak too fast for runes. I hope drop rates are increased or there are still bots. If not this game will be dead from the beginning.
