This is a brilliant idea! I would play the hell out of that.
Many skill points to spare, no infinite mana potions, etc. Scale back the damage\life numbers. Amazing.
IIRC in 1.09 there were no OP uniques anymore. They were all in 1.07 and 1.08
Yeah I got intrigued and did some research and learned that.
How weird would it be to be able to acquire outdated uniques and trade them in modern lmao
Classic is 1.06b. That’s the last patch. Everything after that was lord of destruction.
I would personally love to see a version switcher within d2r.
I’ve played through every patch. I have original 1.00 cds from the first day it was released.
I have 1.06 installed and it is still my favorite.
“Classic” was taken for a ride I agree and works best in 1.06b. As that’s the last patch for “classic” vanilla diablo 2.
Thank you for your input. I actually planned on bringing up 1.06 patch in this discussion.
I personally didn’t play enough 1.06 to know what it was like, but I do understand the differences in how Rare Items were allowed to spawn with greater stats than following patches.
(Dual leech rings droppped at the time, high values of Dexterity & Strength could spawn on nearly any good Rare item. These types of Godly Rares only existed in 1.09 if they were saved from 1.06). Unique items were also drastically different than they are today, and you could easily gamble SOJs.
I am pretty sure that Set Items didn’t have bonuses at the time, which drastically changed how people geared their melee characters after 1.06. (Hsarus belt+boot, Sigon’s helm + Angelic’s Attack Rating boost, etc). The Set Item bonuses actually helped the D2 Classic gameplay, IMHO. (I’ve used both 1.06 & 1.09 gear setups, and I mostly preferred the Set bonuses)
I only know my experiences from 1.09, which I don’t believe the gameplay was much different than 1.06, aside from the itemization changes. 1.09 was very balanced, and it was also insanely popular at the time, we had a huge community of players.
So for me, either 1.06 or 1.09 would be great to go back to, but I do believe that 1.09 would be cleaner from the Developer’s perspective. These Godly Rares no longer dropped in 1.09, and the normal uniques that drop, are basically the same items that drop today in patch 2.3.
So in that regard, 1.09 would be a clean patch for players to “convert” their character to Expansion, and not cause any issues with items that were not intended to be in LoD.
Either way, I would absolutely love to play Classic again if they could roll it back to anything before 1.10
it would not be very classic then would it?
um, there are 100s of people who play classic… games arent showing in queue
nobodys needs classic. It is bad. You should deal with that and play LoD.
Going back to the 1.06 patch idea again, one thing that Blizzard could do is simply not allow any unique items from D2 Classic 1.06 to be converted to Expansion.
The Godly Rare items from that time period wouldn’t likely cause any issues or concerns at all with the LoD game. But the way uniques worked back then would definitely cause balancing concerns with Expansion.
So with in mind, I think the 1.06 latch idea could be clean as well, if the Developers figured out what to do about converting the old school unique items.
classic is perfectly fine, i along with 100s of other people enjoy it even more so than expansion.
You weren’t old enough to remember how fun Classic was before it got strung along with Expansion patches.
You said that you were only 12 years old & can’t remember it.
i was replying to the dude who said no one needs classic because its bad and that we should deal with it and play LOD
also just because i was young and cant remember certain game mechanics doesnt mean i dont remember… you wanna know what i remember? i remember that amazon being a godly character and i miss it!
I am sorry for my misunderstanding.
Yes you are right, Bowazons were very good back then in Pre-1.10. I remember that high damage Gothic Bows had a good deal of value.
It would be amazing if they did aim to recapture these sorts of original experiences.
Classic definitely became an afterthought after LoD was released.
And LoD lost a lot of cool things with patch 1.10 and beyond. 1.09 is like a completely different game with completely different itemization. It’s a shame they obsoleted so much of it with 1.10, a giant patch hastily finished and released by like one person while Blizzard North was collapsing, and nobody did anything about it since.
To me, this is what being a “purist” should actually be about.
I very much miss piercing Guided Arrow.
Classic needs a few things to be considered playable:
.) Shared stash (extra space would be nice to have)
.) Working Lobby that shows all games
.) Working ingame private channels so people can organzise themselves. The whole europe community met at op d2c and op d2classic for more than the last decade. Other realms had similar channels.
.) Future Patches must be handled seperated from lod patches. Pre-Expansion needs different balance changes than lod. (i.e.Amazon)
.) Unlimited respecs. This might be controversial, but now that we see Patches that edit the balance, i don’t want to see my 94 nl pvp char getting useless because of 3 respecs and meta builds changing.
I consider the first 4 points the absolute minimum to make pre-expansion playable again.
All great points.
I will add on to your comment about patches, because Pre-Expansion won’t be getting any new content…it should not be subject to all of the subsequent balancing changes that LoD will continue to get.
Pre-Expansion should be rolled back first and foremost. And then after getting the new D2R QOL improvements, should completely left alone & kept separate from new patches.
Did they mention pre-expansion not being added to the balance changes? I still had hope
I’m all in for a well thought pre-expansion patch. There are so many construction sites at pre-expansion.
I don’t believe so. Hoping that pre-expansion can get some changes on the following patch, if not 2.4.
