Carver Damage In Hell Mode?

Quick question here. Day before yesterday my partner and I were playing D2R in Hardcore Hell mode, in Catacombs Level 2.

I had a Level 74 FoH Paladin and she had a Level 73 Blizzard / Fireball Sorceress.

We see a scary dual boss group of Carvers in the next room, they had combination Might and Fanaticism auras; I was reluctant to even send my normally invincible A5 Frenzy Barbarian merc in there, so I stood just on the other side of the door and whaled away on the Carvers with Fist of the Heavens, and as they are Demon-type monsters, they were being slaughtered in large numbers.

I had just killed the Carver Shaman who had the Fanaticism aura (so only the one with Might was left) and then heard that ugly death wail (Yaaaa!) from my partner’s Sorceress, who had apparently been one-shotted by a single Carver who still had the Might aura boost (and who had sneaked in behind us).

Of course, this vicious little monster died in the next second to another one of my FoH bursts… but the damage was done.

Now here is the question : My partner’s Sorceress had 75% across the board resists, 642 hit points and some PDR. Her A2 Prayer merc had a good healing aura too.

How could a single Carver, even with Might, kill her in one hit? I could understand it if she got hit by, for example, a Frenzytaur or a doll… but a CARVER?

What gives?

this caver is an monster around level 70 with a might aura

: )

75res are vs elemental damage, not vs phys. she only had 642 hp and probably while running 0 def. so the carver could hit her and dealt “huge” amounts of damage with might aura. Hell is a scary place if you don’t have 1k+ health and some gear at least.

if we assume the area in question is not terrorized
then the baseic monster stats should be as seen on arreat summit
http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/monsters/act1-fallen.shtml

since this is cat lvl 2 this is not a

this means lvl 71 dark onewith max roll 81 damage depending on which attack plus cold damage added to attack

if we assume the might aura from a mob would be around lvl 10

which would mean an extra 130% damage

fanaticism would grant an extra 101
now clearly that isn’t enough for a non elite carver to

this means we need to assume carver that 1 shot her was one of those uniques not not a base carver

because even at a max 81 roll hit as the elite monster wig
the extra boost 231% ED boost thats still not enough damage to 1 shot

so clearly there are other factors at play here not being mentioned
either the monster was not alone

the monster she was hit by was not a base carver but an one of the unique ones with boosted base stats meaning they would deal more than 81 base at max… or it means she was amped or something because that only reached around 270 damage per hit

becuase the math and the data provided dont match if we assume it was a non unique carver in a non terrorized zone

so we’re clearly missing some details

like… the sorc being at full hp…
and thats not even taking into account PDR

Monsters also have a 5% crit chance to double all their damage (including non-phys), so that spikes the damage up a lot.

Need to know more details such as PDR, %Physical Resistance(including being cursed), Elemental Resistance(including Absorb) and Monster Bonuses of the Unique pack. Given it was likely a Minion Carver, they’ll get reduced effects of their Unique Leader. Something tells me that one pack had Extra Strong, which amplifies base damage by ~50% on Minions. You then factor in the chance it was a Crit(x2) and Elemental Damage(which lobs 66-100% Elemental Damage on top of w/e the Physical Damage is, which if its amplified, so too is the Elemental, hence why Aura Enchanted, Extra Strong and Elemental Enchanted packs can wreck you so hard).

So if a Minion Carver does 81 base damage, if we amplify it 50% from Extra Strong, that’s 121 Physical Damage. Aura Enchanted from Might(which is Monster Level/6) will amplify it more. Since Dark One’s are level 71 + 3 = 74 / 6 = level 12 Might Aura or 150%. 121 x 2.5 = 302 Physical Damage. Enchanted Damage is then 66 to 100% of THAT so assuming the worst, that’s 302 Physical Damage and 302 Elemental Damage. If they CRIT, double that to 604 Physical and 604 Elemental. 604/4 = 151 + 604 = 755 damage. I may be wrong on my math but suffice to say it’s not out of the realm of possibility that your friend got the raw end of the unlucky stick despite having some PDR on her.

my glass cannon bowazons have learned the hard way to respect every monster in hell

sorcs that focus in mana should do the same !
