The type of ladder you are looking for with no real community wide trading is in Diablo 3.
D2 is entirely built around trading so yeah it’s removal is never gonna happen. If it did it wouldn’t be the same game. The most you could hope for is a type of self found mode option, but technically that already exists as single player.
Multiplayer games designed entirely around self found have to be redesigned for higher drop rates as trading is no longer an option. If you played the numerous versions of D3 you’d realize that was the exact evolution of the game. Removal of RMAH and trading at large by making things soulbound and increasing drop rates a hundred fold or some insane degree. It used to take hours to find one unique in that game and even more to find one set item when trading existed. Now being the self found game that it is rift lords rain legendaries and set items all over the place. The drops are so plentiful it makes the game rather boring after about a day or two into the ladder. It just doesn’t work for longevity and entertainment in a game.

The point that ladder should not allow trading (maybe a separated SF ladder mode) is completely valid and there wasn’t a single real argument against that.
There is no point in having some level leaderboards when one can simply buy their way to top. The more you pay the bigger advantage you get. Simple.
The base idea of being able to freely trade all items is nice, but it always gets abused and leads to massive cheating (RMT, forum gold…). Just look at lobby chats what’s happening. All because of trading.
So, you prefer to put it all on the RNG, instead of giving the player the ability to benefit from his knowledge of the game with his ability to plan out and optimize their character…
Benefit from his knowledge, by that, you mean flipping items (ripping off other players) ?
Well, ok, I agree that can be a competition someone enjoy too, but that’s why I proposed a separated self found ladder mode, for those who want to focus more on actually playing the game.
The RNG is big here, that’s true, but its not comparable with someone buying bis gear in the first week for forum gold.
That completely kills any fair competition.
This is such a stupid argument. First of all, what are you actually competing for? A new toaster? Give me a break.
Secondly, somebody will always have an advantage over you. You can’t possibly compete with no lifers who play the game for 18 hours a day every day and have access to like 8 clients. So what are you trying to accomplish? There will never be a perfectly level playing field. Somebody will always have an advantage.
It’s an RNG based grind fest that is heavily botted.
Not going to be making an esport out of ladder rush anytime soon. It’s mostly pointless. OTHER than letting people play the game “fresh” every couple months. Which really just reactivates the addiction in peoples brains.
Not the type of game a ladder is going to be about skill though anyway. There is no winning…

the leaderboards mean nothing and have never meant anything, its always been bots, being on the leaderboards in d2 only ever showed u had no life, it’s not like it takes “skill” to gain levels, its just how much time you throw at the game.
“ladder” resest have ALWAYS been about starting fresh with a new economy, no one actaully cares about the “leaderboard”… ROFL.

i highly doubt many players would care at all if the “leaderboards” in ladder were removed.

you are right, there is nothing wrong with trading… and in this discussion, there is no win condition… eliminating trade ( becoming an SSF ladder ) would balance leaderboard more than if trading was allowed. popular youtube streamers/community fed people just get carried… the ppl who would rather have SSF, my self and others, want a more balance ladder because of the competition… that should make sense… cause why would enter a competition where whoever has more friends wins, or whoever is richer wins? and if you dont want competition… well you have that option right now in-game live…
