Attack Speed Calculator Question

Hai Diablo Fans
I having the dangdest time figuring something out.
The general question I have is how does IAS on a weapon differ from IAS on gear?
Also, how does having fanaticism affect the impact of ias?
I am finding that on the attack speed calculator, putting a 15 ias jewel in a hydra bow (Windforce) makes no difference in how much ias needed to reach 7 frames (95). In fact no amount of ias on a hydra bow changes the amount of ias needed if I have level 13 fanaticism. I can put “120” ias on the bow in the calculator and still 95 ias needed for that breakpoint.
I appreciate any wisdom on this.

Edit – Im starting to think what I misunderstand is that putting IAS on a weapon is no different than ias anywhere else in d2?? In D3 if you have it directly on the weapon its different than if you have it on gloves. I could have swore its the same in d2??!

Edit 2: The calculator says I need 95 ias with lvl 13 fanat. Do I achieve that with these items:
35 from WF (20 + ruby jewel of fervor)
45 from GG helm (3x ruby jewel of fervors)
20 from gloves

I find the following does a solid job: (https://maxroll.gg/d2/resources/attack-speed) ← copy URL for detailed explanation. For my own personal take on it, see below. Attack Speed rolls on three modifiers:

  1. Weapon Base Attack Speed: This modifier ranges from 20(really slow, typically found on 2-H Weapons) to as high as -30(Phase Blade or really Fast Attack Speed weapons). This is known as Weapon Speed Modifier or WSM for short. Attack Speed on the Weapon itself is the ONLY Modifier that can affect this.

  2. Off-Weapon Attack Speed. Anything that isn’t on the Weapon goes here(marginal impact btw).

  3. Skill IAS. Only three sources of this in the game: Frenzy(Barbarian skill), Burst of Speed(Assassin Skill) and Fanaticism Aura. These have immense impact on the Attack Speed. Do note that ALL SLOWS are applied in this variable, including Decrepify, Chill/Freezing effects and Holy Freeze/Slow modifiers from gear(like Arachnid Mesh’s 20% Slow for example). Meaning the only way to mitigate or counter them is with Skill IAS. Not sure if Impale’s Slow is applied here but I’d reckon yes.

TLDR: Complicated formula but the gist is that area of importance to reach maximum Attack Speed is as follows: Skill IAS > WSM(Base Speed + On-Weapon IAS) > Off-Weapon IAS

Edit: To answer your question, it appears you’ll hit the max breakpoint. I recommend using D2Planner to ensure it though.

  1. Partially wrong, on-weapon IAS has absolutely no effect on WSM and is functionally identical to off-weapon IAS (in LoD weapon IAS was the main determining factor of shapeshifter attack speed and the ONLY factor of Whirlwind attack speed, with D2R IAS changes to these skills it’s no longer the case).
  2. Gear IAS has a major impact on attack speed, it has rapid diminishing returns but it’s not “marginal” by any means.
  3. Werewolf, Maul, and Mark of the Bear from Metamorphosis runeword also give skill IAS, and yes Impale’s slow applies the same as other slows.

D2Planner is known to have IAS inaccuracies with certain skills like Whirlwind, I’d recommend Warren’s IAS Calculator instead:

I’m working from memory here, and it was 20+ years ago, but iirc, it used to be that weapon IAS had a stonger impact on your attack speed than non-weapon ias. But it was changed in a patch.

For the rest: What DM said.

Ever since they changed Whirlwind and screwed around with the Attack Speed formula, Off-Weapon IAS was given as much value as On-Weapon IAS. Yet what I said above was true before they made those changes and was especially true on Whirlwind because only Weapon IAS affected the breakpoints(Off-Weapon IAS had no effect, which lead to certain Weapons only being utilized).

So basically now you look at what the Base Speed of the Weapon is, factor in Skill IAS and from that take the total amount of IAS on Weapon + Gear = Breakpoint achieved. The weight of Weapon IAS has largely been nerfed but Skill IAS still has a huge impact. You have a level 13 Fanaticism that requires 95 IAS to reach the final breakpoint. Level 15 from a perfect Faith drops it to 92 by only yielding 1 more point of Skill IAS(33 instead of 32).

The crazy thing is that if you had Burst of Speed(level 14) that grants you 50 Skill IAS or the same amount that Decrepify/Holy Freeze(level 12) slows you down by, you’d only need 52 IAS to reach the final breakpoint. That’s how stupidly strong that Assassin Skill is and why Hustle is stronger than people think. I just wish the proc rate was better than a meager 5%…

Some super helpful comments here thank you guys!
I did try it out with hero editor and went up and down breakpoint predictably with a “jeweled” windforce vs a non-jeweled.

So now the question arises… wtf is with all of these “faith” build guides!!! You can just use windforce with faith on the merc and wear razor tail AND atmas with max ias breakpoint! I will look more into faith + might merc + pride with a lower breakpoint ok but the pew pew pew factor of windforce/faith merc is very high!

Also, I did find a guide that reflects the build I was thinking of. Its called “Windforce is Godly Now” by ICEMAN. I thought of the build myself but now I found it in a guide pretty much exactly the same. I love how ICEMAN refers to the zon as “he” all the way through the video lmfao.

Lots of builds use Faith because Faith is just a godly runeword… +1-2 All Skills with +3 Bow on base is straight up strong. The %Enhanced Damage modifier is also really nice and has ITD(which really isn’t a huge deal but for some people it is). Then by having Faith on you, you’ll always have the Skill IAS as opposed to relying on the Merc for it and you’ll get a bigger Off-Weapon ED boost from Fanaticism(Party effect is half the holder’s). Then by having it, you have freedom on Mercenary. The most common choice is A2 Might + Pride for Concentration to maximize Off-Weapon %ED, although Reaper Toll for Decrepify is also popular.

Use hustle on 2nd slot and you won’t need fana.

I’d just wish they buff atmas to have higher level amp for more radius and higher chance of triggering it… Bowa would be so much better
