i have little to no interest in playing trapsin, my goal on the new toon i am lvling is probably to go elemental once i get to lvl 40+ so i can use my first respec from traps to that build, my question is does meteor from phoenix strike is an aoe or only st damage and what would be the best dragon finisher to use so i can get some aoe pumping

I just wanted to point out, you don’t need to go trapper through normal, you can make a fists of fire build that will shred normal just as much as wake of fire will. It will keep you in the melee mood and gearing as opposed to setting up for a trapper then doing a full 180 to melee.
