Warcraft II & I Remastered Gameplay Feedback

Love the new visuals and gameplay! Thanks a lot for your hard work!
But I think that more gameplay features are very much needed to make the gameplay experience better:

  1. Unit Queuing.
  2. Building unit creation Rally Points.
  3. Be able to change controls to a grid system: (I swear to god if I have to press P again to create a Peon I’ll loose my sanity).
  4. There are some bugs with the peons. Sometimes when they are harvesting lumber if I tell them to go create a Lumberyard they will take the cost and do nothing. They’ll just keep chopping the trees.
  5. Be able to use more than 12 units at the same time (at least in the campaign/skirmish).
  6. A very big extra would be to have the option to play with Enhanced Pathfinding. As units are always getting stuck really easily.
  7. Being able to zoom in and out with the scroll wheel just like in Starcraft Remastered.
  8. In Warcraft I there is no visual feedback when you right click like the green X that appears in Warcraft 2.
  9. The green X that appears in Warcraft 2 when giving an order is not rendered on top of the undiscovered fog of war. Which makes it feel like the unit didn’t register the order.
  10. Be able to play with the original graphics in 16:9.

Thanks for your time!!

Especially agreed on queueing, rallying and pathing!

This would help new players immensely.

The lack of rally points surprised me. I thought for sure they would at least add those since they’ve been a staple of the genre for eons now. No unit queuing is also a surprising omission.

Two complaints I personally have with the gameplay are the dropped inputs and lack of a mouse pan feature.

Warcraft 2 tends to drop inputs quite often if you press keys in fast succession. Select a Peon and press “B, F” in rapid succession for example, and the “F” will only register maybe half or so of the time, leaving you awkwardly stuck in Build mode with no Farm to place. This doesn’t seem to happen at all in Warcraft 1.

And no mouse panning is a real bummer. I must be one of the few people who hates having to move the camera by swinging the cursor to the edge of the screen (or using the arrow keys), because this complaint doesn’t seem to come up very often… but good lord, that method of control is so obnoxious and outdated. We should be able to pan the camera around by simply holding MMB and moving the mouse. Starcraft Remastered does it. Starcraft 2 does it. Any decent RTS has some sort of panning feature. Why not these remasters? There’s no excuse.

Definitely disappointed by the lack of improvements in Warcraft 2. Please improve:

  • Unit Pathfinding. This was optimised for CPUs from 30 years ago. We can calculate path on a 128x128 grid nowadays.
  • Camera panning. Please.
  • Rally points.
  • Unit queueing.
  • Possible general AI improvements
  • Ability to setup custom teams in custom games with AI
  • Hotkey rebinding.

Unit pathing is the huge one for me. It’s so frustrating when you are used to modern rts games.

Another thing is that you should be able to cast spells and start building when you have multiple units selected. You already can multi cast spells if you have a group of units hotkeyed, then select one unit select the spell and then press the control group. But this is a unintuitve and esoteric mechanic and it makes it unnecesserailly tedious.

I can appreciate that veterans maybe like that the game functions as similar as possible to the original, but I think that they still have the option to play the classic version. The remasted should be tailored to a newer audience that are accustomed to more modern rts titles. Even if you make these quality of life improvements, the core game still remains the same.

I would like a form of autoque or matchmaking system. Preferably with some form of mmr tracking, but I understand that is a big ask for a very unpopulated game. I think however that with a system like that, the game could actually have some potential to grow. I think the low population is reinforced by all the obstacles to play the game.

if you want all of this. It may be better off to support Wargus project
