As a veteran Warcraft 2 enthusiast, it was exciting to hear that Warcraft 2 had been released with a fresh but familiar look and feel and was attracting new players. For people who love this game more than any other game, the idea that it could get big again is intriguing.
A number of people have already posted wishlists for changes and improvements, so there may be some redundancy here, but I understand that the more people that voice together, the more likely it is to be heard. I’ve read about people who shouted together as a people so loudly that city walls fell down.
Warcraft 2 Remastered looks and feels nice in gameplay, and I love that the same gameplay is retained, but there are some things that are painfully lacking.
- Host needs to be able to set teams.
- Host needs to be able to make passworded games and remove obnoxious players.
- The setting where you don’t know who players are, even on your own team is a really fun setting and should be an option. There should also be an option where you can see who is who (like in normal Warcraft 2 online multiplayer, you could click ALLIES box in top right and see all the colors and names in the game, and share and unshare vision and alliance and chat with anyone you choose, also allowing people to observe games.)
- No way to communicate with people outside of the game. There needs to be a way to communicate, as well as to block unwanted communication /w /squelch etc.
- Should be a way to see how many players are on and how many games are being played and who is in what game, like a status page. Ability to add friends, message friends, plan and set up games, check stats (win/loss record), and more, like the old Warcraft 2 mulitplayer gaming had.
- The thud-thud-thud sound effect at the end of a game.
- The beep-beep-beep sound effect at the beginning of a game to make a player aware a game is starting. Currently it’s such a sudden woosh with no sound to alert the user to be ready to begin.
- No custom maps can be hosted unless every player has it in Remastered folder (not sure if that even works since haven’t tested), but download of new maps should be automatic when players join like on old Warcraft 2 multiplayer.
- There needs to be both random order and fixed order starts possible to select when hosting. As it is, I understand it becomes fixed order every time. For instance, if 2 players play 1v1 on Garden of War BNE, they begin in 4/5 every game rather than in random spots around the map. This is bad.
- Ideally a setting where you can change the size of the buildings to suit your vision/screen size so you can zoom in or out on the live map using a setting in the menu options. This would be something new that wasn’t in the old Warcraft 2 but is a wishlist item. Not sure if I’m expressing with the right terms, but they call it a widescreen or HD patch or something for bigger monitors where you can see more of the map at a time and your units and buildings appear smaller.
I’m not sure if there are people seeking input from players, but figured it’s worth a try to see if communication can be made to those who are working on Warcraft 2 Remaster.
I understand the Fog of War problem was remedied quickly, so thank you for that. I dare to hope a little that more of these problems can be fixed so that the Remaster is at least as good as the original multiplayer Warcraft 2 with the features old-timer players like myself have been accustomed to using for decades.
Again, thank you for the effort that has been put into making a new edition of Warcraft 2, which is the best game ever made. The new graphics are shiny and appealing, though I also love the old look and appreciate that it can be switched to in the options, and the unit response time is pleasureful. It would be awesome to restore this game to its former glory with thousands of players on each night!
