I have tried to log onto Bnet with my D2/LOD account several times in the last few years. I have NEVER been able to get it to go online. I can play offline of course.
I think my issue is that I installed it under Win 7 then took the free upgrade to Win10 and that messed things up. I don’t think I have the most modern version and can’t get on Bnet to patch it.
Re-install is likely what I have to do if I ever want to play on Bnet again.
Moved you to your own thread since this is a somewhat niche issue. I suspect that this will fix your issue, but if not, you may need to install to a new admin account or clear the registry entries for Diablo 2.

Before throwing in the towel and reinstalling, you also can try manually downloading and applying the latest update.

Thank you both. I rarely ever mention issues of my own but I hoped it would help anyone else who found the thread who had the same problem. It is not just one easy fix, there are many causes.

Are you still running on an old disk installed version? If so, you should uninstall, then reinstall the internet installer version. This will eliminate the possibility of a file being corrupted or something else goofy causing a problem.
If you have any single player saves, you might want to back them up just in case. C:\Users\Username\Saved Games\Diablo II\charname.*
If the installer gives you any guff about the game already being installed, delete the Diablo II
registry subkey at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\
Side note: If you do get it working, avoid US-East Ladder, as it’s currently infected with the queue plague. Unless of course you like waiting 5-10 minutes to start a game.
No no no. Long ago I claimed the disk keys to my Bnet and installed the Bnet version using the new 26 digit key. However, it was installed under Win7.
I know
I have seen all the posts. I have no idea why there are issues or when they will get resolved.
I do appreciate the regedit and backup info just in case I have to do a full wipe to re-install it. It has been a LONG time since I did that.

If it comes down to the nitty gritty and you do wipe and reinstall, a good backup solution I use is Macrium Reflect. Disk imaging, cloning, mounting of images as a drive and even supports running bootable images as a VM as long as you have Win10 Pro with VMware installed and a system that supports virtualization. That’s all included in the free version.
I have the free upgrade version of Win10 that was offered to Win7 users. My computer (laptop) is from 2013. It was a higher end gaming PC at the time so has handled changes well. I keep it clean and use a fan cooling pad.
I will NOT be wiping Windows. I don’t have a way to re-install it.
P.S. I do have a franken desktop computer that is made of cast off parts from friends. It has newer components than my laptop but is not up to date and I don’t have a monitor for it. Sort of complicated.

The Windows 10 digital license is based on the unique hardware identifiers in the system, specifically the motherboard. You can cleanly reinstall Windows 10 even if it’s a Win7 to 10 upgrade. I’ve done it many times on many different systems without activation problems.
Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10, click download tool now. Run that and create a USB installer. Use a 16GB flash drive, go get the latest drivers and throw them in a folder on the drive.

This is helpful. I hope I never have to do this, but I am bookmarking this. I used to do full wipes and installs all the time but it was WinXP and mostly for work when someone screwed stuff up badly.
These days I am retired and not as up to date as I should be.
Thank you again Jedi. I really do appreciate it.

No problem, happy to help. Reinstalling has gotten much easier since the Windows 7 and earlier days. You’ll be fine.

I still played the disk installed version but my copy came with ver 1.11 and the 26 digit cd keys I’ll never install the battle net app and I have no need to register my cd keys on the battle net app
You will be pleased to know the App has nothing to do with D2. You can’t play D2 through it.
The keys are claimed at the Battlenet account level here on the website and it just makes sure it is linked to your account. You still have to install the game separately and enter the key separately.
