Yes. you need to install Diablo 2 first then LoD.

I have a question regarding that.
I recently installed Diablo 2, using my old CD-Key from way back, registering the key on Blizzard website and downloading Installer on my Mac (running MacOS Sierra).
Now I’ve redeemed my CD-Key for Diablo 2 LOD expansion, downloaded the installer, but it displays the message:
“Buy Diablo 2. It is needed to run the expansion”.
I have the basic Diablo 2 installed on my Mac right now, running smoothly.
So why is LOD not seeing the basic game?
How can I install the LOD over existing basic Diablo 2?
