Blizzard forgot about the TALL PIXELS!

4x3 display graphics. Where stretched, and redrawn stretched.
So all Warcraft I characters are fatty.

This is genuinely a problem. warcraft 1 back in the day WAS NOT A BUNCH OF SQUAT DWARVES!!!

fix this tall pixel problem and give the new sprites some legs, it looks not quite right, like they’re crawling on their knees.

portrait icons are also meant to be more SQUARE!

GENUINE NERD RAGE ABOUT THIS!!! X(

Yes, please update for this, the original DOS game was 320x200 be cause of dos graphics modes, but it was vertically stretched to 4:3 on CRT monitors. As stated in the MickCraft video on Youtube pixels were 5:6, slightly taller than 1:1 squares

Ironically the DOS version that was just released on Battle.net a couple of days ago is correctly configured to display the tall 5:6 pixels. The remaster is not, in the classic graphics mode, and all of the remastered art has been drawn at the incorrect aspect ratio.

The MickCraft video gives a good overview of the problem. Ideally the high-res art would have been drawn at the correct aspect ratio, but it could still be fixed by adding a setting to stretch the pixels taller in both modes.

(A counter-point to this: while it’s true that the game was designed for 4:3, I played the game mainly back in the day on an LCD laptop which I’m sure was displaying square pixels. Later in life I played it on a badly configured DOSBox also with square pixels. So I actually have more nostalgia for the pudgy footman. I still think it should be fixed or added as an option.)

I got a win last night and it was real, I played on the JO777 site

Haha yeah, the old 4x3 stretch really did those Warcraft I characters dirty  Everyone looks like they’ve been hitting too many feasts at the tavern! Classic retro charm, though, part of what makes those old games so fun to revisi
